Signs of chaos
Miguel Ángel Reyes questioned himself about the effects of signage from the finding of a perforation on a traffic light. caused by a bullet shot. This is how, at the beginning of this year, the project named Zonas, which consists of 29 drawings made with ballpoint pen on Fabriano paper began. The apparent, simplified or unfinished lines (strokes) on the silhouettes constitute the distinctive feature of Zonas, and which, at the same time, establish their formal coherence.
As, this project progressed, it turned into an interesting intervention. Mr. Reyes reproduced 5 sets of the 29 drawings in styrene that were made during the first stage (phase) of Zonas to be shown in different parts of Mexico City
As part of the highlight tactic that Mr. Reyes shows the spectator, each signal lacks form. Moreover, it is outside its context with the aim of showing how something that should be functional, organizational, didactic and informative in appearance, many times stops being like that because the signage was badly posed or someone intervening. And, although such signal is visually immediate; due to this, the traces which are supposedly recognizable and universal are no longer visible; with this, people are incapable of reacting instantly.
Zonas is divided in the following way: A, violence zone; B, flooding zone; C, seismic zone; D, fire zone; and E, safety zone. From its apparent simplicity, the pictograms included in these five Zones are representations of the violence and chaos that have permeated the retina of the Mexican society, and have tuned into part of our daily visual culture.

[1] –Signage studies the relation between signs of orientation and the behavior of people. It responds to the necessity of orientation of social mobility, and to show the existing public and private services. It also aims at facilitating the orientation in a specific space, be it to provide more safety, or to show the required services.

Miguel Ángel Reyes se cuestionó los efectos de la señalética[1] a partir del hallazgo de una perforación provocada por un balazo, la cual había quedó marcada en una señal de tránsito. Fue así como a inicios de este año empezó el proyecto titulado Zonas, el cual consta de 29 dibujos realizados con bolígrafo sobre papel fabria. Los trazos aparentemente simplificados o inacabados en las siluetas constituyen el rasgo distintivo de Zonas, a la vez que establecen su coherencia formal.
Conforme progresaba, dicho proyecto se volvió una interesante intervención. Reyes reprodujo en estileno cinco juegos de los 29 dibujos realizados durante la primera etapa de Zonas, a fin de intervenir simultáneamente un número similar de éstos en diferentes sedes de la ciudad de México.
Como parte del guiño que Reyes hace al espectador, cada señal carece de cédula. Además, se encuentra fuera de su contexto, con el objetivo de mostrar cómo lo que en apariencia debe ser funcional, organizativo, didáctico e informativo, muchas veces deja de serlo, ya sea porque la señalética estuvo mal planteada o porque alguien la intervino. Y aunque dicha señal sea visualmente inmediata, debido a ello, los signos supuestamente reconocibles y universales dejan de serlo; con ello, las personas son incapaces de reaccionar en forma instantánea.
Zonas está dividida de la siguiente manera: A, zona de violencia; B, zona de inundación; C, zona sísmica; D, zona de incendio, y E, zona de seguridad. Desde su aparente sencillez, los pictogramas comprendidos en estas cinco Zonas son representaciones de la violencia y el caos que han permeado la retina de la sociedad mexicana y se han convertido en parte de nuestra cultura visual cotidiana.

[1] La señalética estudia las relaciones entre los signos de orientación y el comportamiento de las personas. Responde a la necesidad de orientación de la movilidad social y de mostrar los servicios públicos y privados existentes. También busca facilitar la orientación en un espacio determinado, ya sea para proporcionar mayor seguridad o para indicar los servicios requeridos.
